Introduction

The BAPA+40 outcome document highlights food security as one of the areas to leverage the role of South-South cooperation and triangular cooperation with the goal of achieving sustainable development. South-South and triangular cooperation can serve as means to promote and support industrial and semi-industrial ventures and ensure food security and nutrition, including through the promotion of sustainable agriculture and food systems, food processing, agro-industries, which have the potential to link with global value chains and effectively address the market needs of developing countries

Several countries in the South, such as Brazil, China and India to name a few, have identified Africa as an important trade, investment and development partner, crafting policies, programmes, and initiatives with African governments and societies to engage them in potential win-win partnerships. Developing countries, including African countries, are increasingly recognizing good practices in South-South and triangular cooperation as a viable pathway to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and address common and crucial challenges.

Background and Objective

The United Nations Office of South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) produces a series of good practices publications which highlights Southern good practices presented by Member States, United Nations agencies, intergovernmental organizations, and other development partners.

To this end, UNOSSC and the Brazil Africa Institute (IBRAF) are jointly launching a thematic good practices publication titled “Good Practices in South-South and Triangular Cooperation in the Context of Food Security” which presents 40 good practices on agriculture and food security.  These good practices highlight innovative enterprises that illustrate the central tenets of effective South-South and triangular cooperation; address transnational development challenges; solutions that have been piloted and scaled up; and have tangible development outcomes.

The publication presents notable solutions to crucial challenges faced by developing countries in the area of food security. The good practices gathered in this edition, which are also relevant to the unprecedented global health crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, aims to benefit developing countries seeking to scale up South-South and triangular cooperation initiatives, particularly in the widespread application of policies, strategies and programmes related to food security and agriculture.

This publication is expected to inspire governments, private sector and entrepreneurs, civil society and non-governmental organizations and citizens in general to adopt, improve and share best practices on agriculture and food security, ensuring better livelihoods and well-being for all rural communities.

Followed by the formal launch of the publication, the webinar will also invite representatives from member countries, UN Agencies and development partners to present good practices from the publication and share their success stories and experiences.

The good practices will also be available on South-South Galaxy to facilitate knowledge sharing and cooperation between partners of the global South.
