South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Harnessing Opportunities of the AfCFTA, 23 November 2022

On 23 November 2022, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), and the African Export Import Bank (AFREXIMBANK) are jointly organizing a side event during the African Union Extraordinary Summit on Industrialization, Economic Diversification and AfCFTA that will be taking place in Niamey, Niger during the Africa Industrialization Week. The theme of the side event is “South-South and triangular cooperation for harnessing opportunities of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).”

The event is expected to bring together more than 100 high-level stakeholders; and will be addressed by high level dignitaries from Africa and the international community. The participants will include Africa’s industrial development stakeholders, including African Heads of State/Government, Ministers, the African Union Commission, UN agencies, African regional organizations and the private sector, financial institutions, donors, civil society, non-governmental organizations, academia, and media.

Objectives

  • Awareness raising on the potential of South-South and triangular industrial cooperation in Africa for industrialization and economic diversification
  • Promote South-South and triangular industrial cooperation as complementary development modality to traditional development assistance
  • Explore and discuss ways to enhance South-South and triangular industrial cooperation challenges and opportunities in the context of AfTFCA
  • Showcase evidence based on best practices and relevant industrial development solutions developed through UNIDO projects among African countries
    • Case study – Sustainable Textile Investment and Operations in Ethiopia
    • Case study – Global Network of Regional Sustainable Energy Centres
  • Support African governments in their commitment to promoting and implementing SSTIC projects in Africa
  • Highlight the role that multilateral organizations such as UNIDO, UNOSSC and OACPS can play in facilitating South-South cooperation.
  • Promote awareness of the Afreximbank’s project preparation intervention and role in driving industrial development and export diversification
