In celebration of the 2021 UN Day for South-South Cooperation, the Colombian Presidential Agency of International Cooperation (APC-Colombia), in partnership with the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), is organizing two virtual sessions to draw the spotlight on successful South-South cooperation projects in the Caribbean, Central America, South America, South-east Asia and Africa which have contributed directly to the social and economic recovery of the countries in the  Decade of Action for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. 

Participants include Representatives of the national and multilateral cooperation agencies from Africa, Asia and Latin America; Multilateral agencies; National and Territorial agencies in charge of the South-South cooperation; Trade associations from each Region; Members of academic and research institutes from the Global South; and academicians.

Session 1: South-South Cooperation Contribution in the Recovery Efforts in the Global South

Context: The countries of the Global South have been most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of them have faced setbacks in regard to their achievements in the past few years in the areas of economic growth and social welfare. In this context, and in the frame of the principle of solidarity which forms the basis of international cooperation and particularly, South-South Cooperation, the alliances among the countries of the Global South were strengthened and some South-South projects were formulated and implemented with concrete and successful results, contributing to the recovery of many countries and demonstrating, once again, the contribution of the South-South Cooperation to the 2030 Agenda for Development.

In this 90-minute session, speakers will share the results of the South-South cooperation initiatives which have contributed directly to acceleration of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in the  Decade of Action.

In the panel discussion following the opening remarks, participants will present projects which have contributed directly to the SDG indicators and which have addressed some of the pandemic impacts (economic, social, cultural, environmental) and lessons learned.

Session 2: Conversation on Good Practices and Lessons Learned

Session II aims to provide South-South Cooperation actors a platform to discuss case studies and lessons learned to identify collectively how South-South cooperation contributes to the development agendas.

This 90-minute session will be organized as parallel workshops on three different topics providing an opportunity for various good practices to be discussed, creating a space for conversations regarding good practices which show how the South-South Cooperation modality was utilized to achieve results during the pandemic and the lessons learned.
