Webinar: South-South Girl Power – My Voice, Our Equal Future Amidst COVID-19, 12 October 2020

By October 9, 2020 February 26th, 2024 Events, Gender Events, Webinars, Youth4South

Background

2020 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, and of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, intended to be ground-breaking for the acceleration of gender equality and empowerment of women and girls.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made inequalities even more evident, and revealed the shadow pandemic of gender-based violence. Under the theme of ‘My voice, Our equal future’, the 2020 International Day of the Girl Child provides an opportunity to reflect and engage on contemporary, challenging and complex issues impacting girls in their diversity across the globe. Whether under emergencies, conflicts or stable environments, girls remain at risk and vulnerable to systemic disadvantage, injustice, and abuse.

The United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) under its Youth4South Programme affirms the importance of partners in the Global South, particularly young people, in supporting each other and promoting contextually relevant and inclusive alternatives to guarantee sustainable peace and development. Many stakeholders have been called to invest in strengthening the capacities of grassroots communities, local and regional coordinating mechanisms to truly break the barriers around the positive agency of women, young women and girls.

This webinar will unpack the realities of girls in their diversity across the Global South, along with aspirations, commitments and recommendations for a more inclusive, enabling and strengthening world that leaves no one behind, during and beyond the COVID-19 crisis and the Decade of Action.
