Collaboration Between UNOSSC and the Climate Change International Technical and Training Centre Highlighted at an Event with the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization

Mr Thawatchai Saengkhamsuk, Director of CITC, previews upcoming CITC/UNOSSC Publication.

On 24 September 2020, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organisation (TGO) convened an event in Bangkok, Thailand, to mark the completion of a joint project that has been implemented in three phases. The “Project for Capacity Development to Accelerate Low Carbon and Resilient Society Realization in the Southeast Asia Region” supported the creation of the Climate Change International Technical and Training Centre (CITC), which has developed training courses delivered to ASEAN Countries and beyond. Speaking at the event, a JICA representative observed that CITC was unique in that TGO had had the foresight to make this a regional rather than national asset as had been the case with the many projects supported by JICA in the region. Furthermore, other speakers noted that this was a triangular cooperation project which will now subsist as a South-South technical and training centre.

CITC has been collaborating with the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation’s Regional Office for Asia-Pacific since 2019.  The Chief Advisor to the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organisation, Mr. Koji Fukuda and the Director of CITC initiated the partnership during a visit to the UNOSSC offices. This partnership, which seals the standing of the CITC as another asset of the global South, was highlighted and welcomed by the participants from the Thai Government, Japanese Embassy in Thailand, JICA, various government partners to TGO and International Organisations present. The documentation process on what the centre does and its future plans under the UNOSSC “South-South in Action” flagship publication series is almost completed.
