Launch of Cities Project Pilot on SSTC for Sustainable Disaster Risk Governance in Lebanon

On 10 November 2022, the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) Cities project team, UNDP China and Lebanon co-organized a virtual pilot kick-off meeting to formally start the implementation for a new pilot entitled “the South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Sustainable Disaster Risk Governance in Lebanon”. This new pilot project will be implemented by United Nations Development Program (UNDP) China and Lebanon Country offices jointly with the North Governorate and Tripoli Local Authority of Lebanon, National Disaster Reduction Center of China, Ministry of Emergency Management (NDRCC, MEM of China) and the National Council of Scientific Research in Lebanon (CNRS), aiming to enhance the capacity of disaster risk governance of Tripoli city of Lebanon through learning and exchanging experiences and practice at academic, policy and practical level with selected city of China in the context of South-South and Triangular Cooperation.

The purpose of the kick-off meeting is to build an effective communication mechanism among all partners along pilot implementation and provide an overall picture of the pilot goals, agreed annual work plan and the associated implementation plan. It serves to set the stage for accountability and helps the stakeholders understand their respective roles to support the achievement of all pilot’s deliverables.

The UNOSSC Cities Project seeks to promote SSTC at the city and local levels. Under it, “South-South Cities Clusters” were launched on the South-South Galaxy platform to facilitate information sharing, knowledge exchange, networking, and project collaboration among cities, local authorities, UN agencies, and other development partners. Currently, it offers interactive thematic spaces on COVID-19 Response and Public Health; Disaster Risk Reduction and Mitigation in Resilient Cities; Sustainable Tourism, Heritage Protection and Creative Economy; Sustainable Agriculture Value Chain Development; E-Commerce, Digitization and Smart Cities; Sustainable Transport and Air Quality; Waste Management, Green Cities and Renewable Energy.
