Side Event at the 55th Session of the Commission on Population and Development: Economic Development and Demographic Dividend Among ASEAN Countries.

21 April 2022: During the 55th Session of the Commission on Population and Development, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) facilitated a side event on the topic of “Economic Development and Demographic Dividend Among ASEAN Countries.” The side event was hosted by the National Population and Development Board (POPCOM) of the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the National Population and Family Planning Board (BKKBN) of the Government of the Republic of Indonesia.

The event was a South-South Cooperation opportunity to share knowledge pertaining to country experiences, as well as policy recommendations for the achievement of demographic dividends, highlighting opportunities for sustained cooperation.  The side event was a product of the ongoing South-South cooperation between Indonesia and the Philippines on population and development issues.

Objectives

The objectives of the side event included:

  1. To share and discuss the current economic status and level of demographic dividend of Indonesia, Philippines, and other ASEAN countries;
  2. To share and benefit from the strategies employed by both countries in mitigating the impact of global pandemic in terms of economy, education and health
