WFP and UNOSSC Collaborate with the IBSA Fund and the Government of Brazil to Support Smallholder Market Access in the Republic of Congo

Through the India-Brazil-South Africa Facility for Poverty and Hunger Alleviation (IBSA Fund), and in close collaboration with the Brazilian Government, WFP and UNOSSC are engaging and supporting the expansion of market access to smallholder farmers in the Republic of Congo

Since August 2021, WFP and UNOSSC are engaging and supporting the Republic of Congo with a USD 1 million contribution from the India-Brazil-South Africa Facility for Poverty and Hunger Alleviation (IBSA Fund) for a field pilot project. This is the first time WFP is engaging with the IBSA Fund, which is an important milestone for WFP’s expanding work on South-South and triangular cooperation. It reflects WFP’s growing role in brokering SSTC, and strong support from the Brazilian Government through the WFP Centre of Excellence Against Hunger in Brazil.

The IBSA project in the Republic of Congo, which will be jointly brokered by the WFP Country Office RoC, the WFP Centre of Excellence Against Hunger in Brazil and the global South-South and triangular cooperation team in the WFP Programme – Humanitarian and Development Division, aims to strengthen institutional capacity to expand smallholder farmers’ access to markets, including through the school feeding programme.

The Government of Brazil, which sponsored the initiative, will provide technical assistance and share its recognized expertise in smallholder farming and school feeding programming with national partners in the Republic of Congo.

The IBSA project aims to create benefits for the most vulnerable by augmenting the Republic of Congo’s efforts towards achieving zero hunger in line with WFP’s approach to South-South and triangular cooperation in the context of saving and changing lives for SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), and as part of WFP’s Global South-South and Triangular Cooperation Field Pilot Initiative.
