APC-Colombia: Commemoration of the UN Day for South-South Cooperation: Expanding South-South Cooperation in an Interdependent World

Session 1: Interdependence and Solidarity “Work between partners who need each other”
Each region is comprised of countries with common languages, histories, influence areas and development problems. These interdependencies are the basis of South-South Cooperation – solutions developed in one country can be adapted and replicated in another one, for the wellbeing of people. But this interdependency also entails a vulnerability. Global crisis situations underscore how vulnerable our economies, our political systems and our societies are to the problems that besiege our neighbors. Whether they are discussing climate change, migrations, capital or disease flows, certain situations shake countries and demand joint answers.
To commemorate the Day of South-South Cooperation, APC-Colombia has developed a virtual agenda in two work sessions: one oriented around the idea of interdependence, to present recent experiences of South-South work in scientific cooperation; and another aimed at investigating relevant issues that may be under-explored in the COVID-19 situation.
Participants: Representatives of national and multilateral cooperation agencies from Africa, Asia and Latin America. Multilateral agencies of special relevance in the Global South such as IOM, ILO, UNIDO, UNOSSC. Trade associations of each region. Members of academic and research institutes from the Global South.

Session Two – Unlikely Conversations After COVID-19 “What you want to know, but haven’t been able to ask”
The COVID-19 pandemic has moved our governments, companies and organizations to a path of accelerated learning to evaluate and take action to contain the expansion of the virus, with severe socio-economic effects, which are themselves contagious due to our interdependencies. The virtualization of life caused by the lockdown is already generating important social, economic, fiscal and urban impacts, which are partially irreversible, and for which South-South Cooperation will have to formulate innovative answers. However, the current situation should not completely distract our attention from other necessary matters that need to be discussed.
The session will promote dialog between experts and participants about how South-South Cooperation can help impact specific goals and indicators of the 2030 Agenda, and about the role of trade and investment in South-South Cooperation. These topics were selected through a poll conducted by APC-Colombia and partners of the Global South.
