UNCDF’s work in financial health is centered on enhancing people’s financial security, independence and thus well-being, which in turn contributes to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

UNCDF’s mission is to improve the financial health of the most vulnerable, by helping to align incentives for the private and public sector to deliver financial health-focused services to customers at the last mile. With the support of MetLife Foundation, UNCDF instituted the i3 Program in Malaysia and created an in-country platform anchored as a financial innovation lab, to improve the financial health of low- and moderate-income (LMI) people through digital innovations.

The Centre for Financial Health, in partnership with the i3 Program now works with its partner institutions to field-test and pilot financial solutions that ultimately help improve the financial health of LMI customers in Malaysia. This includes self-employed and independent workers, who find difficulties in maintaining their financial security and resilience. This publication analyzes how the work of UNCDF through the i3 Program and innovation journeys led by the Centre for Financial Health are contributing to the advancement of the financial health of low-income people in Malaysia
