Once water is contaminated, it is difficult, costly, and often impossible to remove the pollutants. Still today, 80 per cent of global wastewater goes untreated, containing everything from human waste to highly toxic industrial discharges. The nature and amount of pollutants in freshwater determines the suitability of water for many human uses such as drinking, bathing, and agriculture. In addition, pollution of freshwater ecosystems can impact the habitat and quality of life of fish and other wildlife which many fish framers relay on for income. In Egypt, Aquaculture is a major industry which accounts for 25.3% of the average household’s protein intake and due to the water pollution, it has had an impact on farmers livelihoods.
Towards a Solution
In 2013, the Conative Labs (a technology start-up based in Egypt), developed Nilebot a system that measures the effects of pollution in real time and transmits that data to farmers so they can be more proactive to finding solutions. The solution helps fish farmers to raise the productivity, achieve higher feed conversion ratio and growth rates, facilitate management and monitoring the fish farm and ensure the quality of farmed fish for human consumption.
Nilebot measures, records and sends the parameters that affect the condition of the water to a personal account of the framer that can be used on a Smart phone, Tablet or laptop at any time and from anywhere. In case of any sudden change in water quality and exceeding the safe ranges of any parameter such as level of oxygen, temperature, salinity, and acidity, Nilebot sends a warning text message (SMS) to a mobile phone to make sure that a quick response will be taken to solve this problem. The warning text messages also include solutions in which the farmers could use to address the issue. Nilebot can be used with all kinds of farms (fish – shrimp) and in different environments (salty water-fresh water).
This solution has helped reduce operating costs of the fish farmers by saving 33 percent of the fish feed and also to decrease the rate of pumping oxygen in average for 4-6 hours.

- Orange Developer Challenge (2015): Nilebote won the first place in Egypt and the second place in worldwide.
- Cairo Maker Hackthon (2015): Nilebote won the first place.
- Sha3`al (2015): Nilebot was one of the winning projects.
