Call for Action: UNFCCC Partnerships for 2022 and 2023, Including COP 27

As temperatures continue to rise at an alarming rate, the impacts of climate change are progressively threatening lives and livelihoods around the world. The recovery from COVID-19 offers countries an opportunity to reorient policies and plans in such a way as to build a greener, cleaner, healthier and more resilient world – and emerge from the pandemic with transformative climate action. The Paris Agreement provides the path forward.

UN Climate Change seeks to engage with all non-Party stakeholders such as subnational governments, cities, states, foundations, NGOs, civil society, multilateral organizations and the private sector. Non-Party stakeholders play a crucial role in supporting the work of UN Climate Change. With their support, we can accelerate climate action and speed up the full implementation of the Paris Agreement. UN Climate Change is the United Nations entity tasked with supporting the global response to the threat of climate change. UN Climate Change is keen to partner with non-Party stakeholders to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Background information on UN Climate Change Conferences

UN Climate Change conferences more commonly known as the Conference of Parties (COP) are held annually and bring together around 30,000 participants to negotiate policies, take stock of and celebrate commitments, highlight and catalyze action by non-Party actors, expand the network of coalitions and partnerships and inspire others. Additionally, the UN Climate Change annually hosts the Subsidiary Body meetings (SBs) and the Regional Climate Weeks.

Due to the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic the COP this year may incorporate a physical and virtual component.

The upcoming COP27 Climate Change Conference will bring together participants to agree on coordinated action addressing climate change.

Before the COP27, there is the annual mid-year UN climate change meeting (the Subsidiary Body for Implementation and the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice). This is an important milestone for Parties to advance discussions in preparation for COP27.

Furthermore, UN Climate Change organizes annual Regional Climate Weeks in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, in Africa, in Latin America and the Caribbean and in Asia-Pacific. The Regional Climate Weeks are unique collaborative platforms where both governments and non-governmental organizations stakeholders gather to address all relevant climate issues under one umbrella.

Opportunities for Partnerships

UN Climate Change seeks to engage in mutually beneficial partnerships with non-Party stakeholders. Any voluntary financial or in-kind contribution, in the form of expertise, materials and innovative solutions will increase our capacity and resources to support developing countries to undertake the transformation required to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, carry out strategic outreach to promote climate action and to deploy technology and innovation.
