Background

Tourism has the potential to advance all of the SDGs, but it has been among the most hard-hit sectors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the ten countries with the largest numbers of World Heritage Sites, but at the height of the pandemic, 89 percent of the countries partly or fully closed their world heritage sites to visitors, which demonstrates great demand for and possibilities of South-South cooperation for the protection, preservation, and management of these sites. The creative economy also calls for greater support and enhanced South-South Cooperation as the downsizing of many creative industries such as venue-based sectors like museums, galleries, and theatres because of lockdown measures have harmed cities and regions in terms of jobs and revenues, levels of innovation, citizen well-being, and the vibrancy and diversity of communities. In 2020, Cities Project organized Travel South series with 4 webinars of knowledge sharing, exchanges and learnings. Building on the results achieved in 2020, in 2021 Cities Project will continue facilitating and deepening collaborations among cities and institutions under this theme in partnership with specialized agencies.
